Richard English is quite correct to identify that no plebiscite was held explicitly on the IRA’s armed struggle in 1919–21, and such was likely not as popular as propagandists claimed it to be. The rebel leaders used conspiracy and deception to outmanoeuvre their opponents and continue planning the rising in secret. Subsequent plays, including the gritty and grimly realistic Joyriders (pr. 1986) and The Belle of Belfast City (pr. 1989), explore the poverty and misery faced by the inhabitants of Belfast as a result of the political conflicts.

W Rowath, a British officer had a comparable experience to McKenzie and observed that "crowds of men and women greeted us with raised fists and curses." In 1177 Prince John Lackland was made Lord of Ireland by his father Henry II of England at the Council of Oxford. [1] The Crown did not attempt to assert full control of the island until the rebellion of the Earl of Kildare threatened English hegemony. This reflects his decision to draw evidence almost exclusively from the printed pages of newspapers and periodicals, and allows him to provide a clear and often powerful framework of analysis.

"Ireland is too great to be unconnected with us, and too near us to be dependant on a foreign state, and too little to be independent." In 1720, Swift protested against the current state of Ireland saying "We have just religion enough to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another" (Baker). These perspectives will serve as a principal point of reference in a detailed discussion of selected plays by some of the most challenging contemporary British and Irish dramatists.
